SCMP's first Climate Change Hong Kong Summit is officially carbon-neutral
Dear valued participants,
It gives me great pleasure to officially announce that our very first Climate Change Hong Kong Summit will be carbon-neutral.
Organising the logistics took months of planning in close consultation with our partner Carbonbase. As our very first climate event, we went the extra mile to ensure that we took all possible measures to offset the carbon emissions produced in the process of running the event, from transporting of goods and materials to hosting virtual sessions, providing food and drinks to in-person attendees, and integrating hybrid facilities.
While the decision to run a carbon-neutral climate event was a no-brainer, the calculations involved were certainly not for the faint-hearted. The SCMP Events team put a lot of effort into reviewing parameters, obtaining data from suppliers and vendors, and making early decisions on items that would usually be the last to consider.
The process made us realise that every single decision, purchase, invitation and broadcast generates a carbon footprint that needs to be effectively calculated and addressed. SCMP Events has chosen the UPM Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas Development Programme, a certified SDG impact project under the Gold Standard for the Global Goals programme, as our sustainable project of choice for carbon-offset.
Our partnership with Carbonbase has proven to be an informative and enlightening experience, and we would like to invite everyone to participate in this net-zero journey.
At the end of the in-person Summit on June 16, all in-perosn attendees will be invited to participate in a post-event survey designed to gather feedback on your experience as a participant. By completing this survey, you will be provided with a special carbon credit voucher, which can offset two months of your personal carbon footprint living in Hong Kong, including your participation in this Summit, be it in-person or virtual. *
We hope that you will join us in this meaningful initiative. More information will be communicated to all participants once the Summit has concluded.
This will be the first event in which we have put significant work into ensuring a minimal environmental impact. We hope to continue to have your participation and support for similar initiatives at our future events.
Have a good Summit ahead of you!
Regards,
